The exhibition “Forms and Figures of New York City” (3.5.-28.6.) is a mixture of fine art and street photography. Sophisticated black and white photographs capture the essence of New York street life. Each image tells its own story about the interaction of people and animals with their environment. Arranged in series, they deal with overarching themes.
The prints are limited to 5 copies (plus 2 AP). They are printed on Hahnemühle FA Baryta paper with an ink with a WIR rating > 400 years, are signed on both sides and are exhibited and sold in black aluminum frames by Halbe with Artglass AR 99 protection. They are available in two formats:
40×40 cm (image size 28×28 cm): CHF 800.
100×100 cm (image format 80×80 cm): CHF 3’500.-
Catalog: Softcover, 22×28 cm, 60 pages, including 52 large-format photographs: CHF 20.-
In the lecture “Photographs with soul” (May 29, 6 p.m., in German), I will outline some thoughts about creative photography and illustrate with numerous photos how a good idea becomes a good picture.
The aim of the lecture is to raise the audience’s desire to immediately grab their camera (or cell phone), set off and capture their own image of the world. Using roughly 100 photos, I will outline my view of the core elements of creative photography. Starting with the basic knowledge of physics (aperture and focal length) over the three principles of the image statement (why, where and how?) up how to emphasize such statement by the use of the two C’s (contrast and composition).
I will tell what I understand by the photographers “Aromat” (the Swiss all-purpose weapon in the spice cabinet) and which are my four favorite books by Feininger, Fang Ho, Cartier-Bresson and the Magnum collective. Last but not least, I’ll share a few experiences on how to find your own style according to the motto “finding, not searching”.
At the
vernissage (May 3, 6 – 9 pm) and finissage (June 28, 6 – 8 pm) I will also be
selling numbered and signed copies of my current book “Reduce to the
Max” with photos that have received awards in competitions (hardcover 21x

About me: My pictures have received awards at international photography competitions, such as two “Gold Winners” at the European Photography Awards 2022, a “Gold Winner” at the Budapest International Foto Awards 2022, two “Silver Winners” at the New York Photography Awards 2022, a silver medal at the Moscow International Foto Awards 2022 as well as a “Bronze Award” at the Prix de la Photographie de Paris 2022.
Thanks to the images of Andreas Feininger, Henri-Cartier Bresson and the f.64 group, especially Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, I discovered my passion for photography. I prefer black and white photography because it emphasises form, whether of nature or man-made. I also like to capture moods, such as the transience of industrial plants or the lightness of the moment in street photography.
Most photos of the exhibition were taken in medium format with Hasselblad cameras, first analogue and later digital. My preference for the Hasselblad system is based on the fact that, thanks to the digital back, I can shoot with my decades old fully mechanical CM 501 and nevertheless benefit from the advantages of the digital workflow. I can also use the digital back on the 907x with modern autofocus lenses, which opens up new areas of photography for me.
Initially, I developed my images in my own darkroom. Later I switched to a digital workflow. However, I have remained true to my image processing principles and there is nothing in my printed images that was not already present on the analogue or digital negative.

On 27 November 2022 from 2 to 5 pm the Advent exhibition will take place in my atelier in Basel.
In the Advent exhibition the series “Should I stay or should I go”, “Staring at the Sea” and “Lightness” will be presented. The latter was awarded a bronze medal at the Prix de la Photographie Paris 2022. In addition, the images from the exhibition “Mystic Woods” will be shown again.
In the Open Atelier there is the possibility to compare selenium-toned handmade prints with a modern print of the same image, to compare different forms of presentation (floating glass vs. glare-free acrylic glass) as well as to discover new images in the folders with the A4 proof prints
A good opportunity to end the year with Christmas biscuits and Crémant d’Alsace on the sunday afternoon of the first advent and – who knows – to find a Christmas present: many pictures of prior exhibitions are for sale and upon request I can make an enlargement of any of the proofs until Christmas. You can also order custom-made items such as several photos in a single passe-partout of any size (maximum 80 x 100 cm).
The pictures are in the format 28 x 28 cm, printed with Epson Ultra Chrome Pro 10 ink (durability > 400 years) on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper (ISO 9706) and signed on both sides. The exhibition presentation is in a handcut black passe-partout with black wooden frame (Max Aab Mod 116, 40 x 40 cm). The selenium-toned hand prints are 24 x 36 cm on Ilford MG IV paper in a white 40 x 50 cm passe-partout and black Max Aab frame. The photos cost CHF 150.- framed (CHF 100.- unframed).
Admission free – no registration necessary.

Thanks to the pictures of Andreas Feininger, Henri-Cartier Bresson and the group f.64, in particular Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, I discovered my passion for black and white photography. I particularly like Edward Weston’s paradigm: “The camera should be used for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself, whether it be polished steel or palpitating flesh”. The themes of my images can be described as “mysticism, forms and transience”. In some pictures I try to capture moods, such as the transience of industrial equipment or the lightness of the moment in street photography. In other images, I emphasize forms, whether natural-made in plants or man-made in architecture. In general, I like mystical images that encourage the audience to make their own interpretations.
