A chronological review of my photos of 2022. This is less a “best of 2022” but an overview of the themes that occupied me this year:
12 January 2022, 20:44 “Fiery Fox Lady”.

There are evanescent situations – such as autumnal fogs or crackling fires – that I like very much. For many years I have therefore tried to capture such moments photographically. However, this is not technically easy and also requires a portion of luck. I therefore enjoyed the above picture, where – with a little imagination – you can make out the face of a lady fox in the flames.
16 January 2022, 12:55 “Two Religions, One War”.

I am interested in history, which is why we visited numerous WW1 military cemeteries in Alsace in the spring of 2022. I captured the dichotomy of the population between Germany and France at the beginning of the 20th century in the project “The in-between people” (https://adrianschaub.com/projects/). Personally, I particularly enjoy the above picture because I was able to take it digitally with my “old” Hasselblad from the 1980s, as the digital back of the Hasselblad fits all cameras since 1957.
22 January 2022, 12:37 “The Guard”

For years I was convinced that I didn’t like photographing people. This is partly because I have to manually adjust focus and exposure on my camera and re-cock the shutter after every picture. In addition, I don’t feel like obtaining a “model release” from the people depicted for the use of the pictures. At the beginning of the year, I came across the British photographer Alan Schaller (http://alanschaller.com/) on the Internet, who takes “street photography” pictures with his Leica, which is also fully mechanical, and I liked them very much. The above was my first “street photography” picture, which was to be followed by others in the course of the year.

Trees have been among my favourite subjects for many years. They were also the main actors in my exhibition “Mystic Woods” in November (https://adrianschaub.com/exhibitions/).
13 April 2022, 15:31 “Last rays of sunshine”.

Capturing transience is one of my favourite subjects. Next year I intend to capture various “lost places” photographically. A visit to the derelict potash mines in Alsace had also sparked my historical interest, which I captured in the project “I had a dream” (https://adrianschaub.com/projects/).

I like the atmosphere of museums, so it was natural for me to live out my new-found interest in “street photography” there. The visitors’ engagement with the artworks provided many interesting subjects.

I have an ambivalent relationship with digital image processing. Most of it – such as adding additional elements like clouds – seems incompatible with my idea of the authenticity of my photos. However, I also had to realise that my personal skills in the darkroom are limited and that I can do the same image processing much more precisely and better on the PC. In the picture above, for example, I applied a red filter afterwards. In the past I would have had to use it when taking the picture.
8 June 2022, 4:47 p.m. “should I stay or should I go No 10”

Water is one of my favourite themes. However, it needs a complementary subject. I was therefore very grateful for the patience of my family on holiday in Saint Malo, which enabled me to shoot the series “Should I stay or should I go” consisting of 15 pictures (https://adrianschaub.com/portfolios/).
11 June 2022, 16:14 “Three Smiles”

I have a mixed feeling about photographing works of art or particular architecture, as I don’t want to adorn myself with borrowed plumes. However, I find this picture of the artworks of Samuel Salcedo (https://3punts.com/en/artist/samuel-salcedo) from the Jardin d’Etretat okay, as I think it definitely has its own artistic merit.

I am a big fan of the musician Bob Dylan. Apart from the music, I admire his courage to allow himself stylistic changes every few years, knowing that he will probably offend a few fans. I adopt this attitude when I read in numerous photography books how important it is to find one’s own style. I assume that my own style already inevitably results from the fact that I only photograph what I like and how I like it. I don’t want to be restricted in my development and from trying out new things, like the series of concert photos of my son Robin’s band “out of order” (https://adrianschaub.com/projects/).

The shape and feel of my Hasselblad cameras bewitch me, so that I always feel the urge to pick them up and take a photo. Consequently I now even take cat photos, although I didn’t used to care much for this genre in the past.

Initially I concentrated on shooting good single images. Reading David duChemin’s books and blogs (https://davidduchemin.com/) got me interested in series. So in 2022 I tried for the first time to create whole series of a particular subject, where however each image is also worth seeing. (https://adrianschaub.com/portfolios/)

Jahresrückblick 2022 in 12 Bildern
Ein chronologischer Jahresrückblick meiner Fotos des Jahres 2022. Dabei handelt es sich weniger um ein „best of“ als um eine Übersicht der Themen, die mich dieses Jahr beschäftigten:
12. Januar 2022, 20:44 Uhr „Feurige Fuchsdame“

Es gibt flüchtige Zustände – wie etwa herbstliche Nebelschwaden oder knisternde Kaminfeuer – die ich sehr mag. Seit vielen Jahren versuche ich deshalb, solche Momente fotografisch festzuhalten. Dies ist jedoch technisch nicht ganz einfach und bedarf auch einer Portion Glück. Ich hatte deshalb Freude am obigen Bild, wo man – mit etwas Fantasie – das Gesicht einer Fuchsdame in den Flammen erkennt.
16. Januar 2022, 12:55 Uhr „Zwei Religionen, ein Krieg“

Ich interessiere mich für Geschichte, weshalb wir im Frühjahr 2022 zahlreiche Soldatenfriedhöfe aus dem 1. Weltkrieg im Elsass besuchten. Die Zerrissenheit der Bevölkerung zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts hielt ich im Projekt „The in-between people“ fest (https://adrianschaub.com/projects/). Persönlich bereitet mir am obigen Bild besondere Freude, dass ich dieses mit meiner „alten“ Hasselblad aus den 1980er Jahren digital aufnehmen konnte, da das digitale Rückteil der Hasselblad auf sämtliche Kameras seit 1957 passt.
22. Januar 2022, 12:37 Uhr „Der Wärter“

Ich habe mir jahrelang eingeredet, dass ich nicht gerne Menschen fotografiere. Dies unter anderem weil ich bei meiner Kamera Schärfe und Belichtung manuell einstellen und den Verschluss nach jedem Bild neu spannen muss. Zudem habe ich keine Lust von den abgebildeten Personen eine „Zustimmungserklärung“ für die Verwendung der Bilder einzuholen. Anfangs Jahr stiess ich im Internet auf den britischen Fotografen Alan Schaller (http://alanschaller.com/), welcher mit seiner ebenfalls vollmechanischen Leica „street photography“ Bilder erstellt, die mir ausgezeichnet gefielen. Das oben stehende war in der Folge mein erstes „street photography“ Bild, dem im Laufe des Jahres noch weitere folgen sollten.
11. April 2022, 14:01 Uhr „Baumgesicht mit Moosball“

Bäume zählen seit vielen Jahren zu meinen Lieblingsmotiven. Sie waren auch Hauptdarsteller in meiner Ausstellung „Mystische Wälder“ vom November (https://adrianschaub.com/exhibitions/).
13. April 2022, 15:31 Uhr „Letzte Sonnenstrahlen“

Das Festhalten der Vergänglichkeit ist eines meiner Lieblingsmotive, weshalb ich nächstes Jahr beabsichtige verschiedene „Lost Places“ fotografisch festzuhalten. Der Besuch der verfallenen Kaliminen im Elsass hatte auch mein geschichtliches Interesse geweckt, welches ich im Projekt „I had a dream“ festgehalten hatte (https://adrianschaub.com/projects/).
8. Mai 2022, 12:55 Uhr „Kunstsammlerin“

Ich mag die Atmosphäre von Museen, weshalb es nahelag, dass ich mein neu entdecktes Interesse für „street photography“ dort auslebte. Die Auseinandersetzung der Besucher mit den Kunstwerken gab manch interessantes Motiv her.
14. Mai 2022, 18:09 Uhr „Rabenweg“

Ich habe ein ambivalentes Verhältnis zur digitalen Bildbearbeitung. Das Meiste – wie etwa das Einfügen zusätzlicher Elemente wie Wolken – erscheint mir unvereinbar mit meiner Vorstellung der Authentizität meiner Fotos. Allerdings musste ich auch einsehen, dass meine persönlichen Fähigkeiten in der Dunkelkammer limitiert sind und ich dieselbe Bildbearbeitung am PC wesentlich präziser und besser durchführen kann. Beim obigen Bild habe ich etwa nachträglich einen Rotfilter angewandt. Früher hätte ich diesen bereits bei der Aufnahme verwenden müssen.
8. Juni 2022, 16:47 Uhr „should I stay or should I go No 10”

Wasser ist eines meiner Lieblingssujets. Es bedarf jedoch eines ergänzenden Motivs. Ich war deshalb sehr dankbar über die Geduld meiner Familie in den Ferien in Saint Malo, welche mir ermöglichte, die aus 15 Bildern bestehende Serie „Should I stay or should I go“ zu schiessen (https://adrianschaub.com/portfolios/)
11. Juni 2022, 16:14 Uhr „Drei Lächeln“

Ich habe ein gemischtes Gefühl beim Fotografieren von Kunstwerken oder besonderer Architektur, da ich mich nicht mit fremden Federn schmücken will. Dieses Bild der Kunstwerke von Samuel Salcedo (https://3punts.com/en/artist/samuel-salcedo) im Jardin d’Etretat finde ich jedoch in Ordnung, da es meines Erachtens durchaus eine eigene gestalterische Leistung aufweist.
3. September 2022, 14:14 Uhr „Grande Finale“

Ich bin ein grosser Fan des Musikers Bob Dylan. Abgesehen von der Musik bewundere ich seinen Mut, sich alle paar Jahre stilistische Wechsel zu erlauben, wohlwissend dass er damit wohl ein paar Fans vor den Kopf stösst. Diese Haltung übernehme ich, wenn ich in zahlreichen Fotobüchern lese, wie wichtig es sei, einen eigenen Stil zu finden. Ich gehe davon aus, dass sich mein eigener Stil bereits zwangsläufig dadurch ergibt, dass ich nur das fotografiere, was mir gefällt und wie es mir gefällt. Ich will mich aber in meiner Weiterentwicklung und beim Ausprobieren neuer Dinge nicht einschränken, wie zum Beispiel bei der für mich atypischen Serie von Konzertfotos der Band „out of order“ meines Sohns Robin. 18. September 2022, 11:08 Uhr „Auf der Lauer“

Form und Haptik meiner Hasselblad Kameras betören mich, so dass ich immer wieder den Drang verspüre, diese in die Hand zu nehmen und ein Foto zu machen. Dies hat dazu geführt, dass ich nun bereits Katzenfotos mache, obwohl ich früher für dieses Genre nicht viel übrig hatte.
10. Oktober 2020, 18:32 Uhr „Freunde“

Anfänglich habe ich mich darauf konzentriert, gute Einzelbilder zu fotografieren. Die Lektüre der Bücher und Blogs von David duChemin (https://davidduchemin.com/) haben mein Interesse an Serien geweckt. Ich habe deshalb im 2022 erstmals versucht, ganze Serien eines bestimmten Motivs zu erstellen, in denen aber auch jedes Bild als Einzelbild sehenswert ist. (https://adrianschaub.com/portfolios/)
